IndCat is a free online Union Catalogue of Books, Theses and Serials of major university/institute libraries in India. The IndCat contains bibliographic information, location and holdings of Books, Theses and Serials. It provides the records in standard bibliographic formats i.e. MARC, MARCXML. It covers all major subjects, i.e. Psychology, Statistics, Political Science, Economics, Law, Public Administration, Education, Commerce, Linguistics, Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Life Sciences, Botany, Zoology, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Management, Architecture, Sports, Literature, History, Computer Science etc. A Web-based interface is designed to provide easy access to the merged catalogues. The IndCat is a major source of bibliographic information that can be used for Inter-Library Loan, Collections Development as well as for Copy Cataloguing and Retro-Conversion of bibliographic records.

Objectives:-

Primary objective of union catalogue is to provide seamless and integrated access to a wide range of bibliographic records of books, serials and theses available in Indian University libraries, institutes and research organizations. The database will help the users to find out books, serials and theses in nearby libraries from where they can borrow the documents on Inter Library Loan. Following are aims and objectives of union catalogue.

Features & Functionalities:-

  • To promote use of union catalogue among user communities;
  • To archive bibliographic records of various institutions, universities and research organization;
  • To ensure uninterrupted 24 x 7 x 365 online access to all the records stored in the database;
  • To help researcher in their research work by providing platform to search related literature; and
  • To serve the user with its inbuilt inter library loan feature.

DESIDOC

About Defence Scientific Information and Documentation Centre (DESIDOC) started functioning in 1958 as Scientific Information Bureau (SIB), as a division of the Defence Science Laboratory (DSL), which is now known as Laser Science & Technology Centre (LASTEC). On May 4, 1967, the SIB was named as Defence Scientific Information and Documentation Centre (DESIDOC) under the administrative control of DSL. It became a self-accounting establishment of DRDO on 29 July 1970 and started functioning as a central information resource centre for DRDO. The Centre was functioning in the main building of Metcalfe House, a landmark in Delhi and a national monument. In August 1988, it moved to its newly built five-storeyed building in the same Metcalfe House complex. Since it became a self-accounting unit, DESIDOC provides S&T information, based on its library and other information resources, to the DRDO headquarters, and DRDO laboratories all over India. National Library

 About The National Library, foremost among the libraries in India, is one of the four designated libraries entitled to receive under the Delivery of Books and Newspapers (Public Libraries) Act, 1954 a copy of every publication published anywhere in the country.
